Mathematics is moving from “a scarcity of answers” to “a scarcity of credible understanding, question selection and meaning”.
In 2024, the DeepMind system reached IMO silver; in 2025, Gemini Deep Think reached IMO gold in natural languages within the prescribed time frame; and in 2026 research agents began to deal with professional research under expert guidance.
This leads to a few judgements:
- Proof that production will be cheap and certification a bottleneck.
- Humans may know it’s true, then understand why.
- Mathematicians’ values will shift from climbing to the issue.
- It’s more like experimental science.
- The goal of math education has to change.
- The upper limit of scientific development could shift from human thinking to social absorption.
This is a seed: the speed at which a large model breaks through the mathematical field has outpaced human understanding of it.
